Corey Coleman undergoes surgery on broken right hand

BEREA, Ohio -- Cleveland Browns wide receiver Corey Coleman underwent surgery on Monday for his broken right hand.

Coleman is expected to be placed on injured reserve. He will be eligible to return to practice after six weeks and to the active roster after eight.

"It's unfortunate," coach Hue Jackson said. "But those things happen."

Jackson declined to give a specific timetable on Coleman's return except to say, "hopefully we'll get him back."

"Hey, next guy up," Jackson said. "We got to go coach the guys we have here. There's nothing magical going to happen that way."

This marks the second year in a row Coleman was sidelined by a broken bone in his right hand. On Sept. 21, 2016, he broke a bone in practice and missed six games.

"It almost feels like to him the same time, different year," Jackson said. "Around the same time here comes the injury, and it's unfortunate. But it's something that we go through and we got to get through it."

Coleman, a first-round pick in 2016, injured his right hand on Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens after he fell awkwardly following an incompletion.

He has six receptions for 62 yards and one touchdown in two games this season. Against Baltimore, he caught one pass after targeted seven times.

Coleman's injury depletes a struggling Browns receiving corps that has caught just 19 of 40 passes thrown to them. Veteran Kenny Britt, expected to step in for Terrelle Pryor (who left as a free agent), has just 15 receiving yards in two games.

"There's going to be another guy to come in and try to work his butt off to try to fill that gap," quarterback DeShone Kizer said. "We know that Corey is a special player for us and a big playmaker for us. We have to find someone else to step in in that role."
