Who calls the plays for the Jets?

Offensive coordinator John Morton is doing a nice job under less-than-ideal circumstances. Josh McCown has benefitted greatly from Morton's short-passing scheme.

Jets' playoff hopes were always a pipe dream

New York's chances of reaching the postseason in ESPN's FPI have lingered in the single digits all season long. But with Sunday's loss to Tampa Bay, the Jets' odds of securing a top-10 pick leaped north of 80 percent.

After today, the Jets will take a five-day break before returning for practice on Monday. That's the advantage of the bye week. The downside: They're sitting on a tough loss and "we kind of have to sit through this bye week with a sour taste in our mouth," WR Jermaine Kearse said.

My film review of the Jets' offensive-line mess against the Bucs: LG James Carpenter (4 QB knockdowns), RG Brian Winters (1.5 sacks), TE Eric Tomlinson (2 sacks), RT Brandon Shell (1 sack), LT Kelvin Beachum (1 QB knockdown), C Wesley Johnson (1 QB knockdown, 0.5 sacks). Miscellaneous: 1 sack, 2 QB knockdowns. The Bucs used a Wide-9 look on certain downs, and the Jets had trouble with that.

Jets' Bowles says McCown will remain top QB

Jets coach Todd Bowles says he is sticking with veteran Josh McCown as his quarterback despite New York dropping to 4-6 as the team heads into its bye-week break.

When he threw his 14th TD pass of the season yesterday, Josh McCown, 38, became the oldest quarterback in history to set a career high for scoring passes in a season. How's he feel about that? "It kind of says a lot of things and you can look at it a few different ways," he said. "I'm just thankful to be a part of it, and really that number needs to be a lot higher to be honest with you, in my opinion. I just look back at the few touchdowns that we've had taken away and other things that I feel like I could've done better to have more."

For those who want to see Bryce Petty and/or Christian Hackenberg, you could be waiting a long time. Jets coach Todd Bowles said he has no plans to replace Josh McCown, barring injury. Bowles said he's "not coming up with a scenario right now" that would involve a change.

Jets offensive snap analysis (based on 69): RB – Eli McGuire 36, Bilal Powell 33, Lawrence Thomas 12; TE – Austin Seferian-Jenkins 58, Eric Tomlinson 20; Neal Sterling 5; WR – Jermaine Kearse 66, Robby Anderson 56, Chad Hansen 48, ArDarius Stewart 10. Analysis: McGuire played more than Powell? That made no sense. Fantasy owners must hate the Jets because their running-back usage is so unpredictable. Hansen played a career high due to Jeremy Kerley's suspension. Stewart's lack of PT is curious.

Jets defensive snap analysis (based on 71): DL – Mo Wilkerson 58, Leo Williams 50, Steve McLendon 30, Kony Ealy 28, Mike Pennel 14, Xavier Cooper 11; LB – Darron Lee 71, Demario Davis 71, Jordan Jenkins 52, Josh Martin 37, Freddie Bishop 19; DB – Jamal Adams 71, Marcus Maye 71, Buster Skrine 69, Darryl Roberts 64, Juston Burris 35, Mo Claiborne 16, Rontez Miles 8, Terrence Brooks 6. Analysis: Claiborne was replaced by Roberts after aggravating a foot injury. Bishop replaced David Bass, who was inactive for the first time. Remember when Bass was their leading sacker?

Bucs QB Ryan Fitzpatrick couldn't resist tweaking the New York media. Asked about getting the ball to DeSean Jackson early in the game, he said, "The New York media knows I️ love to force the ball to me favorite guys," he said with a laugh, an obvious reference to his many picks in which Brandon Marshall was targeted.
