Last season, coach Gerard Gallant was unceremoniously fired by the Florida Panthers after 21 games thanks to a clash of philosophies with ownership, following a division title in the previous season. Today, he's the head coach of the Vegas Golden Knights, the NHL's most surprising success at 21-9-2. Two of the expansion team's top players were also Panthers castoffs: Forwards Reilly Smith and Johnathan Marchessault. On Sunday night, the Knights beat the Panthers, 5-2, in Gallant's first game against them since his firing. Marchessault had a goal and two assists; Reilly had two assists; and the two forwards combined to score a game-clinching empty net goal in the third period. Here's Marchessault and Gallant on this "revenge" game.

The Blackhawks didn't look great after their losing streak hit five games on Dec. 6 with a 6-2 throttling by the Capitals. Since then, Chicago has won five-straight, including a 4-1 win over the Wild on Sunday. "I don't think anyone was too worried in here," goalie Corey Crawford said. "You don't want to put any extra pressure on yourself." But Sunday's win felt important. The Blackhawks and Wild each had 37 points entering the game; the win catapulted Chicago past Dallas for fourth place in the division. Said winger Ryan Hartman: "We knew what this game meant, how big it was." Up next: a visit to the Stars on Thursday.

A few Golden Knights fans told me they consider Sunday's game against the Florida Panthers "revenge night," as it's the first time coach Gerard Gallant faces the team that unceremoniously fired him 21 games into the 2016-17 season following a difference in philosophy with ownership. "Is that what they're calling it?" asked Knights forward Reilly Smith, who played for Gallant in Florida along with Vegas teammate Jonathan Marchessault. "At the end of the day, it's just another home game you want to win, but it's always fun playing your former team." Gallant said he's spoken to Panthers GM Dale Tallon and goalie coach Rob Tallas ahead of the game between the Knights (20-9-2) and the Panthers (12-15-5), both of whom are friends. Will there be any ‘money on the board' to encourage his current team to beat his former one? "No, I'm not allowed to do that," he said, with a smile. "It's not that we're bitter at them. We had a good time there. And they gave me another opportunity to be a head coach. I'm happy with what we're doing here now."
