On a positive note, starting center Ali Marpet has been back practicing this week, as has Evan Smith and George Johnson. I'm told Johnson's hip tightened up last week before the game in Cincinnati, which is why he was held out. He missed all of last season with a fractured hip.

Injury update: DeSean Jackson did very little in practice today due to a sore ankle. Given the way this team approaches injuries, it wouldn't surprise me if he doesn't suit up Thursday. Jackson also told me before that he wanted to keep things under wraps for the season. Brent Grimes is still out too.

Best play of the day: Tuesday's practice belonged to Bucs wide receiver Mike Evans, who used his 6-foot-5 frame to leap over defenders. He caught multiple touchdown passes, including a one-handed grab against Solomon Patmon and then a toe-tapper in the corner of the end zone against Tashaun Gipson.

Getting heated: Tempers flare for Jags, Bucs

The Jaguars and Bucs got involved in multiple clashes during joint practices Tuesday, including an incident where a punch was thrown.

Bucs offensive tackle Demar Dotson: "I think we're just anxious. I don't think we have [anything] against Jacksonville. I don't think Jacksonville has [anything] against us. It's just another opponent coming in here and they're trying to protect their ground. And we're trying to take it from them, so there's gonna be a little chippiness."

Bucs head coach Dirk Koetter said he didn't see the fights break out towards the end of practice between the Bucs and Jags because he was on an adjacent field. But you can tell by his responses that he wasn't too pleased that they happened. There were three total. "Both teams knew that if it happened, they were gonna get kicked out," Koetter said.

Bucs safety Chris Conte on the fight with Arrelious Benn: "We were just playing good defense and they were getting frustrated. He decided to push me so I'm not gonna let somebody push me around."

Preseason Power Rankings: Bucs on the rise

The Buccaneers climb a spot closer to the top 10 in our rankings. Jameis Winston is starring on "Hard Knocks" this preseason, and he may be close to starring in the NFL.

Bucs quarterback Jameis Winston saw some positives in last week's preseason opener, but said they can't trade touchdowns for field goals. "Me and Mike Evans can't get inside the 2-yard line and not connect on two straight attempts."

Bucs rookie tight end Antony Auclair said that the biggest adjustment that he's had to make coming from Canada is what he's allowed to do at the line of scrimmage. In American football, one player on offense can be moving when the ball is snapped but he can only move side-to-side. "In Canada, you can move forward and backward and sideways -- everyone can move so it's a lot different," said Auclair.

St. Petersburg, Florida natives and Lakewood High School graduates Dante Fowler and Bernard Reedy catch up after Bucs-Jags joint practices. The two played together in little league, high school and event got to play against each other for a game in college.

Way too many Jaguars defenders getting their hands on short passes against this first-team Bucs defense today. Offense has not looked crisp.

Tyler Patmon just had a solid red zone period. He picked off a Jameis Winston pass that bounced out of his receiver's hands and then made a really nice tackle on Adam Humphries.
