Panthers' Olsen wants extension, open to TV

Carolina Panthers tight end Greg Olsen wants a contract extension and believes he can play at a top level for another three to five seasons.

David Newton ESPN Staff Writer

Panthers Pro Bowl tight end Greg Olsen, 33, told me his first choice would be to get an extension and remain with the Panthers a few more years and finish his career with the organization. If that doesn't happen he has other options, including replacing Jon Gruden as a MNF analyst if ESPN were to choose him for the job. None of that has been decided.

Pro Bowl tight end Greg Olsen told the team website that he'd like to get an extension done before he begins the 2018 season, the final year of his current contract. If not, he said, "then next year I'll become a free agent.'' Olsen, 33, called this a "huge'' year and said he can play for "years more if I want to.'' He also said it takes "two to tango,'' meaning the Panthers have to step up to extend him. There's still plenty of time to do that, but Carolina is tight against the salary cap. Extending Olsen before the season and reducing his $9.75 million cap hit in 2018 makes long-term sense.

The Panthers claimed quarterback Taylor Heinicke off waivers from the Houston Texans. Heinicke spent the 2015-2016 seasons the Vikings, where he was under new Carolina offensive coordinator Norv Turner. The Panthers still are having conversations with Derek Anderson, who has been Cam Newton's backup since 2011.

Judging by videos posted on the Panthers website most, if not all, of the team has reported for voluntary workouts. Cam Newton, who has a $500,000 workout clause in his contract, broke the team down on the field as they began conditioning. Luke Kuechly (shoulder) and Julius Peppers (shoulder), who will be limited after offseason surgery, also are in attendance. Mario Addison is flying back in today to participate.

Quick takes from Panthers' preseason schedule: The Buffalo defense in Week 1 should be a good test for Cam Newton and Carolina's new group of receivers. The Week 3 game against New England and Tom Brady should be a good test for a secondary under construction.

Panthers' preseason schedule: Week 1 at Buffalo; Week 2 vs. Miami; Week 3 vs New England Patriots; Week 4 at Pittsburgh Steelers.

Panthers draft caps made by New Era will include the words "Two States, One Team'' on the front and "Keep Pounding''' on the back. These will be the first hats players selected by the Panthers will put on at the upcoming draft.

A lot of misinformation was flying around the sale of the Panthers on Monday. Here's what we know. A source close to the situation told ESPN that David Tepper, a minority owner with the Pittsburgh Steelers and hedge fund billionaire, remains a part of the process as do Charleston, South Carolina, billionaire Ben Navarro, Alan Kestenbaum and one unnamed candidate. Tepper contacted two news outlets to deny a report that he was out. "I have to tell you, for me, I like the people down there,” Tepper told the Charlotte Observer. “They remind me of my original hometown, Pittsburgh. The only thing I'm telling you is I haven't dropped out,''

Panthers' Davis suspended first 4 of final year

Entering his final season, Panthers linebacker Thomas Davis will be suspended for the team's first four games after he violated the league's performance-enhancing drug policy.

David Newton ESPN Staff Writer

Panthers linebacker Thomas Davis will begin the last season of his NFL career suspended for four games for testing positive to a banned substance. This is thé message he wrote on Twitter accompanied by a video: ‘'This is by far one of the saddest days of my NFL career. I never thought that this would happen to me. I've worked extremely hard to do things the right way on and off the field. Panther Nation please know that I am not a cheater. #KeepPounding''

David Newton ESPN Staff Writer

University of South Carolina tight end Hayden Hurst is visiting with the Panthers today, according to multiple reports. He would be an interesting selection at No. 24 in the draft considering the Panthers have no proven tight end -- at least in terms of a receiver -- behind Greg Olsen, who is entering the last year of his contract. One to keep an eye on.
