Chargers need help reaching postseason after loss to Chiefs

COSTA MESA, Calif. -- The Los Angeles Chargers are down but not out.

"At this point in the season, we don't control our own destiny right now," Chargers coach Anthony Lynn said. "We lost that today [Saturday]. We can win out, but we need some help. All we can control is these next two weeks."

If the playoffs started today, at 7-7 the Chargers would be on the outside looking in. However, with two games left the Bolts still have faint playoffs hopes.

According to ESPN's Football Power Index, the Chargers have a 5 percent chance of winning the AFC West and a 16 percent chance of reaching the postseason. The Chargers hit the road to face the New York Jets on Sunday and then finish the regular season at home on New Year's Eve against the Oakland Raiders.

Taking a spin on ESPN's playoff machine this morning, here are three scenarios I dialed up where the Chargers can still make the postseason. If you find others, please let me know in the comments section.

Easiest path: Chiefs lose their last two games (at home against the Miami Dolphins and on the road against the Denver Broncos), and Chargers win their next two. Chargers win AFC West at 9-7.

Also a realistic possibility: Tennessee Titans lose their next two games (Titans host the Los Angeles Rams and the Jacksonville Jaguars), the Buffalo Bills lose one of their next two (Bills travel to the New England Patriots and the Miami Dolphins), and Chargers win their next two. Chargers go to the playoffs as an AFC wild card team at 9-7.

Possible, but unlikely: Baltimore Ravens lose their next two games (at home against the Indianapolis Colts and the Cincinnati Bengals), the Buffalo Bills lose one of their next two and the Chargers win their next two. The Chargers go to the playoffs as an AFC Wild Card team at 9-7.
