READING, Pa. -- A Pennsylvania college football player was charged with stabbing his teammate with a corkscrew during a fight at a dormitory.
Police said Albright College freshman Marquis Stewart, of Bethlehem, was arrested after the stabbing early Sunday in Crowell Hall. The 18-year-old was jailed on attempted homicide, aggravated assault and other charges, The Reading Eagle reported.
The victim was another freshman football player, 18-year-old Dhameer Madison, of New Castle, Delaware. He was taken to a hospital, where he was last listed in stable condition.
Officers responded to the dorm at around 2 a.m. on reports of a fight between two men that turned into a violent altercation, police said.
Madison was in the room with a female resident when another man entered and asked who had hit Stewart. Shortly after, Stewart allegedly entered the room with a multitool -- a device similar to a Swiss army knife.
Police said Madison punched Stewart in the face and a fight ensued, ending with Stewart stabbing Madison three times in the left rib cage with the corkscrew part of the multitool.
Tom Durso, a spokesman for Albright, said Stewart was suspended from school and further action may be taken pending the results of an investigation.
"We are deeply concerned any time an incident such as last night's occurs," Durso said Sunday.
Stewart was arraigned Sunday and remains held at Berks County Prison on $400,000 bail. Online court records don't list an attorney for him.
