Daredevil restart gives Larson third consecutive Michigan win: Sitting in his racecar during a red flag delay near the end of the Pure Michigan 400 at Michigan International Speedway, Kyle Larson pondered the possible routes to an overtime victory. He was in fourth-place and would restart for the final two-lap shootout behind leader Martin Truex Jr. Larson hadn't had a fast racecar all day at Michigan International Speedway, but he thought with a gutsy move on the restart, he could steal a win in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race. Ahead of him, Truex, the race leader, was in the opposite positon. He had had a fast racecar all day, and he figured he needed a strong restart to repel whatever move Larson or somebody else would throw at him. Like Larson, he was trying to figure out which scenario would be most likely to take him to Victory Lane.[More](8-13-2017)
Kyle Larson won the Pure Michigan 400 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race at Michigan International Speedway for his 3rd win of 2017, 3rd win at Michigan, and 4th career win.
Larson led only two laps on the day, the final two. He took the lead from #78-Truex on the final restart, the first attempt at NASCAR Overtime after a late-race accident involving #95-McDowell and #27-Menard.
#78-Truex, Jr. held on to finish 2nd then #77-Jones, #31-Newman, #6-Bayne, #37-Buescher, #3-Dillon, #24-Elliott, #1-McMurray, and #18-Busch.
Pole sitter #2-Keselowski finished 17th.
#78-Truex, Jr. won the second stage. #2-Keselowski won the first stage.
#78-Truex Jr's. driver points lead increases to 129 points over #42-Larson.

Group qualifying under the three-round qualifying format:
• Round 1 -- All entries will have 20 minutes to post a qualifying time, after which the 24 registering the fastest laps will advance to the second round. Those failing to advance will be sorted based on first-round times in descending order (from fastest to slowest).
• Round 2 -- The 24 fastest from the first round will have 10 minutes to post a second-round qualifying time, with the 12 fastest advancing to a third round. Those not advancing will earn starting positions 13 through 24 based on time, again in descending order.
• Round 3 -- The final round will be five minutes in length. The fastest times from this session will determine the first (Coors Light Pole Award) through 12th starting positions.
There will be a seven-minute break between each round; teams may make adjustments to their entries only during the individual breaks. They will not be allowed to jack the vehicle or raise the hood, and once the car or truck enters the garage, it will no longer be permitted to return to the track for additional qualifying attempts.

How to Calculate Track Speeds: use the formula Speed = Distance divided by Time. Distance is Track Length, and Lap Time into Hours. Once hour is 3600 seconds, so the calculation for a 48 second lap at Daytona(2.5 miles) would be: Speed = 2.5 x (3600/48), = 2.5 x 75 = 187.500mph. For a 19 second lap at Bristol(.533 miles): Speed = .533 x (3600/19), = .533 x 189.474 = a speed of 100.990mph

Storyline - Multi-zone Matters at Michigan: Michigan International Speedway is the highest speed track on the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup circuit, with speeds at the end of the straightaway reaching 212 mph. All that speed generates heat in the tires, so to combat that, Goodyear brings its multi-zone tread tire to Michigan. The multi-zone tire features two compounds, with one on the inboard two inches of the tread that is tougher and more heat resistant to combat the high operating temperatures and protect the part of the tread that takes the most abuse and runs the hottest. The second distinct compound is across the outboard 10 inches of the tread and is "softer" to provide more grip.
"When we brought the multi-zone tread tire to the Racing Division in 2013, high-speed tracks like Michigan are what we had in mind," said Greg Stucker, Goodyear's director of racing. "The speeds that these Cup cars run at big tracks like Michigan generate a lot of heat in the tires. With the camber that teams build into their set-ups, the tire runs only on the inboard edge of the tire all the way down the long straightaways. Running the tougher compound on the inboard allows us to
run a more tractive compound on the outboard so cars will have maximum grip through the corners."
Notes: While teams in NASCAR Cup and Camping World Truck Series will run the same right-side tire code (D-4726) at Michigan this week, they will run distinct left-side tire codes . . . this is the same combination of tires that Cup teams ran at Michigan in June . . . Michigan is the only track at which Cup teams run this left-side code (D-4702) . . . in addition to here, Cup teams did run this right-side code at Las Vegas earlier this season . . . as on all NASCAR ovals greater than one mile in length, teams are required to run inner liners in all four tire positions at Michigan . . . air pressure in those inner liners should be 12-25 psi greater than that of the outer tire.
