Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce was chosen this week's community MVP by the NFL Players Association for his role in the opening of a robotics lab in Kansas City that will serve underprivileged kids. Kelce gave to the project $45,000, half from his Eighty-seven and Running Foundation and half on his own. “By far one of the coolest things I've experienced since being in the NFL,'' Kelce said of the award. “It's humbling. It really is. To be recognized for helping out in the community, it means everything to me.'' Kelce has been heavily involved in helping in the community since he joined the Chiefs in 2013. “My mother and father ingrained in me to give help whenever you can,'' Kelce said. “It's been who I am since I was a kid. When I got the platform to be in the NFL, it was definitely something I wanted to pursue is helping out in the community.''

Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy on RB Kareem Hunt, who is 11th in the league in rushing with 124 yards: “I know the numbers don't show (this) but Kareem is probably playing better football than what he played last year. He understands exactly what we expect from him . . . running his (behind) off. He's playing hard, he's playing fast. I know the numbers are not there but the effort, the energy and the detail (are) better than they were at . . . this point last year . . . He's doing all the little things that we're asking him to do. If he continues, it's gonna take care of itself. The numbers will come.'' Hunt through two games last season led the NFL in rushing with 229 yards.

Patrick Mahomes turned 23 on Monday, a day after he threw six touchdown passes in the Chiefs' 42-37 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. The way he made it sound, there wasn't much of a celebration. “I came (to the Chiefs' practice facility) and I got to watch some film,'' he said. “I didn't want to go to dinner. My girlfriend had gotten me a cake and so I just ordered (delivery). She said that's fine with her as long as that's what I wanted to do.'' Staying low-key about a birthday is in line with how Mahomes said he's handling the national attention he's receiving for throwing an NFL record 10 touchdown passes in the first two games of the season, both Kansas City wins. “I've seen it on social media but that hasn't really fazed me,'' he said. “It's still early in the season. I know there's a lot of season left. For me, it's just all about the process, the process of every day having a routine, going in there, doing what you need to do in order to have success.''

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes on whether he planned to be named the AFC offensive player of the week every game this season, as he was for the first two of the season: “I don't know about every one of them but it is truly an honor to get it one time and then get it another time. It speaks to the offense and the team that we have. I'm just going out there and doing my job and I'm putting it in those guys' hands and they're making plays.''

Pat Mahomes on Kansas City's fast offensive start: "You never expect to have 10 touchdowns at this point. But I knew with this offense (and) the weapons we had and the scheme coach Reid is drawing up that we had a chance to get really, really good. The possibilities are endless."
