When it comes to 49ers, 13 is the number Cowboys look at most

FRISCO, Texas -- The numbers say the Dallas Cowboys should beat the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.

The 49ers have the 20th ranked offense and 28th ranked defense in terms of yards. They are 25th in points scored and 23rd in points allowed. Most importantly, they are 0-6.

But the Cowboys say they aren't buying those numbers.

They are paying attention to another number involving the 49ers.

"They've lost five games by 13 points here total, so they've been in all these games," tight end Jason Witten said. "They're champing at the bit. They're well coached. I know John Lynch is drafting the right type of players. You can see that program coming into its own ... I think when you watch tape as much as we do -- it's different than college -- you don't really sneak up on anybody nor does anybody sneak up on you. Watch them on defense. They fly around. They're young and athletic. Those are teams that I think you learn real quick if you stay for a cup of coffee in this league, you better respect that guy across from you or he'll kick your tail. So we've got a lot of respect for them. Certainly when you play teams like this you've got to be focused and think you're not going to just roll the ball out there. They're a good football team."

After losing their opener 23-3 to the Carolina Panthers, the 49ers have lost by 3, 2, 3, 3 and 2 points, including two games in overtime. The Cowboys' three losses are by a combined 34 points, thanks to their 25-point Week 2 blowout against the Denver Broncos.

"It's come down to a field goal here or a point there," Cowboys safety Byron Jones said. "Most people will assume they're not a good team at 0-6, but that's not the case."

At 2-3, the Cowboys can't really thumb their nose at anybody, even a winless team. With the Washington Redskins, Kansas City Chiefs, Atlanta Falcons and Philadelphia Eagles next on the schedule, the Cowboys can't afford a loss Sunday.

This is the 10th time in Jerry Jones' tenure the Cowboys have started 2-3. Only once have they made the playoffs (1996). This is the fourth time the Cowboys have started 2-3 under Jason Garrett and they have never finished better than 8-8.

"I think the biggest thing we try to focus on is just ourselves and what we need to do to play our best football," Garrett said. "Obviously we have great respect for them and their coaches and players. All you have to do is watch the tape. They've been in close games all year long. Again our focus is on ourselves and what we need to practice our best each day to play our best on Sunday."
