Garoppolo attributes loss to 'way too many' penalties (0:29)

Nick Wagoner ESPN Staff Writer

49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo played two full series in Saturday night's loss against the Texans and were it not for two penalties on center Weston Richburg that led to a Garoppolo interception (which bounced off receiver Dante Pettis' outstretched hands), it would have been a nearly perfect preseason performance. Garoppolo finished 10-of-12 for 136 yards with a touchdown and an interception for a passer rating of 107.0. The sour taste of that play shouldn't take away from the fact that the Niners offense had a strong showing in its second exhibition game, even if Houston wasn't deploying some of its top defenders. Garoppolo has been sharp in training camp and seeing that carry over to a game situation is a positive sign that things are on track for the regular season opener against Minnesota on Sept. 9. Just as important: the Niners didn't have any apparent serious injuries to key players like they did last week against Dallas.

49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo looked very sharp in two series of work Saturday night against the Texans, though it ended on a sour note after his pass over the middle for Dante Pettis bounced off Pettis' hands and was intercepted. Garoppolo finished his night 10-of-12 for 136 yards with a touchdown and an interception for a rating of 107.0.

For as good as the 49ers starting offense looked on its opening drive, the defense was almost equally bad. Some missed tackles and assignments allowed the Texans to move it easily down the field for a 1-yard touchdown to former Niners WR Bruce Ellington. Two weeks in a row the 49ers starting defense has looked shaky on the opening drive.

The 49ers got what was pretty much an ideal first drive for their starting offense Saturday night against the Texans. They went 82 yards for a touchdown with QB Jimmy Garoppolo looking particularly sharp. Garoppolo was 6-of-7 for 87 yards and a touchdown on the drive and he showed a little bit of everything, including a good deep ball to Marquise Goodwin for 40 yards and a little bit of improvisation. Might not be much reason for him to play another series after that.

The list: DL Arik Armstead (hamstring), WR Max McCaffrey, RB Matt Breida (shoulder), CB K'Waun Williams (ankle), CB Richard Sherman (hamstring), RB Jerick McKinnon (calf), SS Marcell Harris (hamstring), LB Malcolm Smith (hamstring), OT Garry Gilliam (concussion), TE George Kittle (shoulder), DL Solomon Thomas (concussion).

49ers holding RB McKinnon out for preseason

A right calf strain suffered in practice over the weekend will keep 49ers running back Jerick McKinnon on the sideline for the remainder of the preseason, according to general manager John Lynch.

The 49ers made it official Tuesday; signing RB Alfred Morris to a one-year contract. To make room for Morris, the Niners released OL Alan Knott.

49ers HC Kyle Shanahan said team is bringing RB Alfred Morris in to provide depth amidst injuries at position. Morris still needs to pass physical but expected to join team in Houston. Running backs Jerick McKinnon (calf) and Matt Breida (shoulder) are not available this week for joint practices with the Texans and a preseason game on Saturday.

The injury bug has been attacking the 49ers during training camp but they continue to avoid serious, long-term issues that could carry into the regular season. They did it again Sunday when RB Jerick McKinnon hurt his right knee in practice and went for an MRI. That MRI showed a calf strain. McKinnon will rest this week (and miss joint practices and preseason game against the Texans) and then be re-evaluated next week.

Some highlights from 49ers' Sunday session: QB Jimmy Garoppolo had a mostly strong practice. Threw a perfect deep ball for big gain to Aldrick Robinson during move the ball period and had multiple connections with Marquise Goodwin, Trent Taylor and Pierre Garcon. Threaded the needle to Taylor in tight space for a touchdown in red zone work... CB Jimmie Ward had a couple of pass breakups... FS Adrian Colbert had an interception on an ill-advised throw from Garoppolo... Raheem Mostert had a good day filling in at running back.
