Signed this week, Rams kicker Cairo Santos gets a game-winning moment

SEATTLE -- Cairo Santos stood in the postgame locker room and expressed relief.

The Los Angeles Rams kicker, signed last week to fill in for All-Pro Greg Zuerlein, atoned for a shanked extra point with a field goal to lift the Rams to a 33-31 victory over the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday at CenturyLink Field.

“It was a blessing to get another opportunity in the same game to redeem myself,” said Santos, who is in his sixth season in the league. “Sometimes you don’t get that chance and you have to go a whole nother week thinking about it and wanting the opportunity.”

Trailing by a touchdown in the fourth quarter, running back Todd Gurley II scored on a 5-yard run, but Santos’ extra-point attempt sailed wide left as the Seahawks led 31-30.

On the ensuing series, with 6:05 remaining in the game, the Rams’ offense stalled at the Seahawks 21-yard line and Santos kicked a 39-yard field goal to put the Rams ahead 33-31.

“That was impressive,” quarterback Jared Goff said. “For a guy that’s been on our team for one week to not flinch, not blink. Missing the PAT and to come back and kick what ends up to be the game-winner is huge.”

The Rams are, however, awaiting the return of Zuerlein, who averaged 11 points per game last season and is recovering from a groin injury suffered during pregame warmups of a Week 2 victory over the Arizona Cardinals.

Prior to working out and signing Santos, the Rams released Sam Ficken, who missed 2 of 3 field goal attempts in two games, and coach Sean McVay said there was a possibility that Zuerlein would be ready to play against the Seahawks.

However, the Rams opted to sign Santos to ensure Zuerlein would not be rushed in his return. It is uncertain how long Santos, who has made 92 of 109 career field-goal attempts, will remain with the team.

Said Santos, who also kicked a 19-yard field goal in the second quarter: “This team is so special in the way that everybody had my back. I didn’t see a look in anybody’s face of disbelief in me.”
