Patriots rookie DE Deatrich Wise's head injury halts his momentum

A breakdown of the New England Patriots' 2017 draft class and its progress after two weeks of training camp:

Derek Rivers, DE third round (No. 83 overall): Rivers has been awarded one of the team’s front-row parking spots in the players’ lot, which are usually reserved for top workers in the offseason program. That's an indication the Patriots are pleased with Rivers’ off-field approach. On the field, Rivers has opened camp as a backup behind Trey Flowers and fellow rookie Deatrich Wise. Rivers could have a chance to contribute initially as a situational pass-rusher.

Tony Garcia, OT, third round (No. 85): A developmental prospect who is being groomed behind starter Nate Solder (who is in the last year of his contract), Garcia worked with the third unit early in camp before an undisclosed injury put him on the sideline. Garcia didn’t play in the preseason opener, and the more time he misses, the harder it might be for him to catch up, which would increase the likelihood of the team considering injured reserve for him.

Deatrich Wise DE, fourth round (No. 131): He was the primary beneficiary of Rob Ninkovich’s retirement early in training camp. Wise was getting reps with the first-unit defense and seemed to be making the most of them. But in the preseason opener, the 6-foot-5, 271-pound Wise took a knee to the back of his head, which could sideline him for a period of time. He checks all the boxes from a physical standpoint, but injuries at Arkansas contributed to him slipping to the fourth round.

Conor McDermott, OT, sixth round (No. 211): The 6-foot-8, 305-pound UCLA product has consistently competed at right tackle with both the second- and third-unit lines, and he was spotted before the preseason opener snapping as an emergency option on special teams. His brother, Kevin, is the Minnesota Vikings’ primary long-snapper. Effort is never in question with McDermott, who is currently behind starter Marcus Cannon and Cameron Fleming on the right tackle depth chart.

UNDRAFTED FREE AGENTS: BYU linebacker Harvey Langi, Wyoming tight end Jacob Hollister, Northwestern wide receiver Austin Carr and Valdosta State cornerback Kenny Moore II appear to be making a hard charge for a roster spot. The Patriots traditionally keep at least one undrafted player on the initial 53-man roster each year.
