Rumor Central: Tigers having difficulty in Justin Verlander talks?

The Detroit Tigers "aren't remotely close with any team" in trade talks for right-hander Justin Verlander, according Bob Nightengale of USA Today.

Rumor Central

Verlander's salary is largely viewed as a deterrent on the trade market. The 34-year-old is owed $56 million over the next two seasons and has a $22 million vesting option for 2020 that is guaranteed with a top-five finish in the 2019 Cy Young vote. In addition, the Tigers have been noted to have a high asking price for the six-time All-Star, but might be willing to include cash in a potential deal for their longtime ace.

On Thursday, it was reported the Houston Astros and Milwaukee Brewers are interested in Verlander, while the Chicago Cubs continue to monitor him. Per Nightengale, "there are a couple of teams" kicking the tires on Verlander: the Cubs are one; the Brewers are not.

Verlander ranks among the top 10 pitchers in Tigers history in career starts (372), innings (2,456), wins (178), WHIP (1.20) and opponent average (.237). His 2,308 strikeouts while wearing the Old English D -- which he has for all 13 years of his career -- are second only to Mickey Lolich (2,679).
