Astros, Dodgers rewrite record book in Game 5 barnburner

The Houston Astros and Los Angeles Dodgers played deep into the night on Sunday.

They went even deeper into the World Series record book.

In the year that set the regular-season record for home runs, the Astros became the first team in World Series history to have five different players homer in a game in their 10-inning, 13-12 win, which gave them a 3-2 series lead. They were the third team to hit five home runs in a World Series game overall.

"I thought Game 2 was probably the best baseball game I ever played in," said Astros third baseman Alex Bregman, whose RBI single ended the game. "It was unbelievable, the huge homer and all the home runs that were hit. I didn't think that would ever be topped; I thought that would be the best game I ever played in my career.

"Who knows where this one ranks, right up there with that game -- back and forth, the two best teams in baseball fighting to the very end and going toe to toe with each other," Bregman said. "Everybody was used on both teams, pretty much, every single player. It was special for us to come out on top."

Including the Dodgers' two home runs, the teams also set the record for most home runs in a World Series with 22 and put the total number of homers hit in the postseason at 101 -- the most in a single postseason.

"I think it's crazy, man," said Astros shortstop Carlos Correa, who went 3-for-5 with a home run and a double. "To just be part of it is such a blessing. These games are hard on me. I feel like I'm going to have a heart attack out there every single time.

"It's high pressure out there," Correa added. "The game is going back and forth. Both teams are great, scoring runs, and putting up at-bats together. And there's a lot of pressure on you when you're out there and you want to win a game, and you want to win the World Series. So hopefully we can win one more game and take a break, because this is hard on me."

In addition:

Clayton Kershaw allowed his eighth home run of the postseason in the fourth inning, setting the record for most homers allowed in a postseason by one pitcher.

• It was the second game in World Series history in which each team scored at least 12 runs. The first was in 1993's Game 4 when the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Philadelphia Phillies 15-14.

• This was the first World Series in which four different players age 23 or younger hit a home run. Cody Bellinger, who is 22 years old, homered on Sunday night, following Bregman (Game 1), Corey Seager (Game 2), and Correa (Game 2 and Game 5), who are all 23 years old.

• According to Elias Sports Bureau, the only other World Series with homers by three players age 23 or younger was played in 1934. The young home run hitters included a pair of future Hall of Famers: Joe Medwick of the Cardinals and Hank Greenberg of the Tigers. The other was Bill DeLancey, the Cardinals' rookie catcher.

• Sunday's game was the highest-scoring extra-innings game in postseason history.

• It was the first game in World Series history with three three-run homers (two by Astros, one by Dodgers).

• The Astros became the first team in postseason history with three game-tying home runs in a game.

Astros manager A.J. Hinch echoed Bregman's Game 2 comparison.

"Just when I thought I could describe Game 2 as my favorite game of all time, I think Game 5 exceeded that and more," Hinch said. "It's hard to put into words all the twists and turns in that game, the emotion, doing it at home, in front of our home crowd. Just exactly what you expect to come to the park with [Dallas] Keuchel and Kershaw pitching. Just a perfect setup game for a bunch of runs."
