Left-hander Daniel Norris recalled, outfielder Tyler Collins demoted

The Detroit Tigers have recalled left-handed pitcher Daniel Norris from Triple-A Toledo, the team announced, sending down outfielder Tyler Collins in a corresponding roster move.

Norris, 23, is regarded as one of the team's top pitching prospects and was among the leading candidates competing for the fifth starter spot in spring training. However, a back injury derailed his bid and Shane Greene nailed down the job.

The young southpaw has struggled in Toledo since returning from his rehab assignment, though it is expected that the Tigers plan to use him out of the bullpen for the immediate future.

Norris said that he feels healthy but has been battling his own anxiousness to make it back up to the majors in recent weeks.

"I want to be here and this is the ultimate goal, but I think sometimes when you're down there in Triple-A you start trying to get here too much rather than focusing at the task at hand," Norris said. "I've been battling that for sure."

After Tuesday's 5-4 win over the Washington Nationals, there was a lengthy delay before media was allowed into the clubhouse. Manager Brad Ausmus was asked if there were any transactions made, but he declined to divulge.

On Wednesday, Ausmus elaborated on the decision, explaining it as one based on need rather than reward. He said that fellow youngster Matt Boyd was probably the more deserving candidate, but both he and Buck Farmer had pitched recently. Meanwhile, Norris, who was slated to pitch for the Mud Hens on Wednesday, could provide more length if the team gets in a bind.

"He hasn't pitched like we think he's capable of, but this was a matter of need," Ausmus said. 'This was more of a logistical [decision].

Norris' arrival could be a continuation of an influx of young arms to the Tigers. Michael Fulmer, the team's No. 1-ranked prospect, is replacing an injured Greene (finger) in the rotation. Fulmer picked up a win in his third MLB start on Tuesday, giving up three runs on seven hits in five innings pitched.

Boyd could be a candidate to join the team soon as well.
