Savannah State confirms Earnest Wilson III's resignation

Savannah State announced Wednesday that Earnest Wilson III has stepped down as head coach after three seasons.

He has reportedly taken over at Elizabeth City State, although a formal announcement had yet to be made.

Wilson compiled a 2-32 record, with only one Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference win, at Savannah State. The Tigers have had only one season with more than two wins since moving to the FCS level in 2000, and Wilson's three seasons marked their longest head coaching tenure since Bill Davis from 1986-92.

"We thank Coach Wilson for what he has done to enhance our football program during his tenure," Savannah State athletic director Sterling Steward Jr. said. "We will begin an immediate search for a replacement and continue to build a competitive, championship-caliber football team."

During the search, linebackers coach and special teams coordinator Tony Pierce will serve as interim head coach.
