Billy Joe Saunders: 'Drug cheat' Canelo Alvarez's reputation has evaporated

Billy Joe Saunders has insisted Canelo Alvarez's reputation is still damaged despite his hair test returning a negative result for the banned performance-enhancing drug clenbuterol.

Alvarez (49-1-2, 34 KOs) tested positive for the drug twice in February and has subsequently been banned from the sport for six months. He has maintained the adverse finding was a result of eating contaminated meat in Mexico.

Despite Alvarez's negative hair follicle test helping to add some credibility to his defence for the positive clenbuterol findings in his February urine samples, current WBO middleweight champion Saunders believes he is still in the wrong.

"My opinion on that is that he's a cheat, a drugs cheat," Saunders told ESPN. "He's still a cheat, always will be.

"Everything's he's done in boxing in my eyes has evaporated."

Despite Saunders' firm stance on Alvarez's reputation, he admitted he would still fight him if the money was right.

"100 percent," Saunders added. "We're in a business where, you know, it's very money orientated.

"You've got to go where the money is. Of course I would [fight him] but it doesn't change my opinion that he's a drugs cheat."

Alvarez was scheduled to face Gennady Golovkin in a highly-anticipated rematch on May 5, but was forced to withdraw due to his suspension which expires in August.

Saunders (26-0, 12 KOs) was touted as a potential replacement, but the British boxer explained that while it was always unlikely he would face Golovkin, it is still a possibility for the future.

"The May date was never going to happen, but it could have happened in June," said Saunders. "They seem to have gone another route. The ball was in their court and they threw it out.

"It the boxing gods want it, it will happen. But if they don't then was never meant to be so we'll see where it goes from here."

Saunders is set to make a fourth defence of his WBO world title against Martin Murray on June 23.
