Women's boxing divisional rankings: A new No. 1 at flyweight and two new faces at lightweight

Gabriela Celeste Alaniz, above, celebrates her victory against Marlen Esparza to win three flyweight world titles. Cris Esqueda/Golden Boy

Gabriela Celeste Alaniz defeated Marlen Esparza in their rematch to win the WBC, WBO and WBA flyweight titles Saturday night inside the Save Mart Arena in Fresno, California.

Alaniz (15-1, 6 KOs), from Buenos Aires, Argentina, traveled to fight in the U.S. for the first time last July and loss a majority decision to Esparza in a close fight -- the only loss of her career. The rematch was ordered and this time, Esparza struggled to make weight and was two pounds over at the official weigh-in, losing her belts on the scales. Only Alaniz was eligible to win the titles, and she did with scores of 97-93, 96-94 and 92-98.

"I'm very happy. The belts are coming back to Argentina," Alaniz said after the fight. "The secret to winning against her was just knowing her. Right now, I just want to go home and celebrate with my family until whatever is next."

Esparza (14-2, 1 KO) was coming off a seven-fight winning streak, and thought she'd done enough to edge another victory.

"I thought the scorecards would be like last time, in my favor," Esparza said. "She doesn't really do much and I thought I was ahead of her. I want the rematch with Alaniz. And if I am successful, I would like to go after a fight with [strawweight undisputed champion] Seniesa Estrada. ... I'll be back, I know I will."

Alaniz takes the No. 1 spot, with Estrada falling two places to No. 3 after the loss.

Also on Saturday, but in Liverpool, England, Brazil's Beatriz Ferreira defeated Yanina del Carmen Lescano to win the vacant IBF lightweight title.

Ferreira (5-0, 2 KOs) was dominating the fight when in the fifth round, Lescano suffered a cut over her left eye due to an accidental clash of heads. The fight was stopped in the sixth round and Ferreira won a technical unanimous decision, 59-55, 59-55 and 58-55. Ferreira enters the 135-pound rankings at No. 4.

In China, Jessica Camara, of Montreal, continued her activity with her fourth fight in 13 months with a split decision victory over former junior welterweight champion Hyun Mi Choi.

Camara (13-4, 3 KOs) outboxed Choi during the fight to win by scorecards of 98-92, 96-94 and 94-96. With the victory, Camara becomes champion Katie Taylor's WBA mandatory challenger. She takes the No. 5 spot at 135 pounds.

Rankings will be updated every Tuesday. They'll be based on recent bouts, head-to-head competition and the quality of opponent. As with almost everything, until fighters square off against one another, there is a layer of subjectivity to it. Fighters who haven't fought in 18 months and don't have a fight scheduled will be removed from the rankings until they fight again.
