Jerwin Ancajas could fight Jonas Sultan in Los Angeles or San Francisco

There is still no definite date when the much-anticipated fight between International Boxing Federation (IBF) super flyweight champion Jerwin Ancajas and mandatory challenger Jonas Sultan will happen.

Matchmaker Sean Gibbons, who co-promotes Ancajas, told ESPN5 he had a discussion with Bob Arum who is still trying to decide when to have the fight. Gibbons said nothing has been set in stone yet, but he hinted that the all-Filipino title bout could possibly be held in Los Angeles or San Francisco.

"We are waiting on Mr. Bob Arum to confirm the exact date. He loved the idea of [having the fight in either] LA or San Francisco area [that it] would be great for the historic battle between Ancajas and Sultan," Gibbons said.

Los Angeles and San Francisco have the largest Filipino communities in the United States and it could be the reason why the Top Rank chief is eyeing either of the two areas as the battle ground for the two Filipino pugs.

"That is the plan but no confirmation at all. Bob is looking at late May or first week of June," he added.

If the showdown pushes through in late May or early June, Gibbons said it wouldn't affect the schedule of Ancajas' two fights for the remainder of 2018.

"Yes [we will] come back September and finish year in December," he said. "But again the main thing is how he comes out of the Jonas fight will dictate the rest or the year."

The Ancajas-Sultan bout is the first title fight between two Filipinos since 1925, when Pancho Villa beat Clever Sencio via unanimous decision for the world flyweight belt in Wallace Field in Manila.

Both Ancajas (29-1-1, 20 KOs), who is coming off a 10th-round TKO win over Mexico's Israel Gonzalez on February 4 in Corpus Christi, and Sultan (14-3, 9 KOs) have started their training for the upcoming fight.
