No New Orleans Saints players were selected to the Pro Bowl for the first time since 2007, which isn’t a huge surprise since they’re 5-9 and one loss away from their worst record in a decade.

Drew Brees, QB: I’m not stunned that Brees missed the cut, because I figured he was one of seven quarterbacks fighting for six spots. I have no problem with the six that made it ahead of him (Tom Brady, Cam Newton, Carson Palmer, Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson and Ben Roethlisberger). No one could have argued against Brees getting in ahead of Roethlisberger or even Rodgers based on his statistics. But the 5-9 record is a killer. Brees ranks fourth in the NFL with 4,135 passing yards and second in yards per game at 318, since he missed one game with a shoulder injury. He’s fourth in completion percentage and fifth in total QBR but ninth in TD passes (28). Worst of all for Brees, the torn plantar fascia he suffered Monday night might also keep him from reaching his 10th Pro Bowl as an alternate.

Terron Armstead, LT: I’m also not surprised Armstead missed the cut. He’s the kind of young up-and-comer who needed more team success to get recognized. But the supremely athletic, third-year pro will get there eventually. Pro Football Focus has Armstead graded as its third-best tackle this season, with 19 total pressures allowed in 524 snaps.

Cameron Jordan, DE: Jordan was an extreme long shot since he ranks eighth among defensive ends with nine sacks this year and plays for one of the worst defenses in NFL history. But he has mostly lived up to his five-year, $55 million contract extension this season as both a pass-rusher and run defender. PFF has him graded as its best 4-3 defensive end and second-best edge rusher overall with 66 combined pressures, 30 stops and five batted passes. If Jordan keeps that up, he’ll get to his second Pro Bowl sooner than later.
