Doug Marrone: Lack of consistency is the reason Jaguars cut Jason Myers

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Jaguars coach Doug Marrone said he cut kicker Jason Myers simply because he wanted more consistency out of the position.

Though Myers made 11 of his 15 field goal attempts this season, he was 0-for-3 on attempts longer than 50 yards and missed two PATs. He missed two 54-yard field goal attempts in Sunday's loss to the Los Angeles Rams at EverBank Field.

"He had a lot of talent, Jason Myers, and it just hasn’t been consistent," Marrone said Wednesday morning. "We’re just trying to get ourselves better, and I told him keep going and keep working. I think he’s a guy that has the ability to play in this league, and we just wanted to bring someone in to see if we can get some more consistency out of that position."

Myers made 81 percent of his field goal attempts in two-plus seasons with the Jaguars, including going 10-for-19 (52.6 percent) from 50 and longer. New Jaguars kicker Josh Lambo made 81.3 percent of his field-goal attempts, including going 4-for-8 from 50 and longer, with San Diego in 2015 and 2016.

Marrone said he didn't cut Myers to send a message to the rest of the roster, especially those on special teams. That unit cost the Jaguars 17 points against the Rams.

"I don’t try to do that stuff through the media or through moves," Marrone said. "I’d rather just tell the players, 'Hey, listen, if you don’t pick your game up, you’re in trouble.' That happens quite a bit, those conversations with players. But I also tell them, 'Hey, you’re doing a hell of a job; let’s keep that going.' I just try to be honest and upfront with every player because I think that’s what they're looking for."
