Brian Gutekunst follows Eliot Wolf's decision to stay with Packers

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- It looks like the Green Bay Packers will keep their personnel department intact.

One day after director of football operations Eliot Wolf pulled out of the running for the San Francisco 49ers general manager job and signed a new contract with the Packers, director of player personnel Brian Gutekunst did the same thing.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Friday that Gutekunst has decided to remain in Green Bay. The decision was based purely on his family’s love of Green Bay and the community, a source told Schefter.

"He sincerely appreciates the 49ers interest in him and wishes them the best moving forward," the source said.

The third member of Packers general manager Ted Thompson’s inner circle, senior personnel executive Alonzo Highsmith, also is expected to return. Highsmith recently signed a contract that ties him to the Packers through the 2018 NFL draft.

It remains unclear how much longer Thompson, who turned 64 this week, will remain on the job or who will succeed him. He has two more years left on his contract. Last year, team president Mark Murphy told ESPN that he has a feel for Thompson’s timeline and has a succession plan in mind.
