CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A lawsuit was filed on Monday against Carolina Panthers linebacker Shaq Thompson seeking damages for injuries and lost wages incurred by former Duke quarterback Anthony Boone after a head-on collision with Thompson.

The incident happened on the morning of May 22, 2016 when, according to Thompson, he lost control of his vehicle, crossed the center line and crashed head on with Boone while trying to retrieve his cell phone that had fallen to the floorboard.

Boone was released from the hospital nine days after the accident. He was treated for a broken hip, damage to the tendons and ligaments in his hand and injuries to the ribs.

Boone, who was not wearing a seatbelt, played the 2015 season for the CFL’s Montreal Alouettes but has not played football since. Thompson, who was wearing his seat belt, was not injured and continues to play outside linebacker for the Panthers.

Thompson was charged for driving left of the center line.

According to the lawsuit, Boone is seeking more than $25,000 in punitive and compensatory damages. The amount was chosen to get the case out of district court and before a jury in the North Carolina superior court, which can award any amount greater than $25,000.
