Tim Cone looks for ways to keep Ginebra sharp

Barangay Ginebra is peaking with a seven-game winning streak and a two-game quarterfinal sweep of Meralco on Wednesday night.

Tim Cone now wants to make sure complacency doesn't creep in heading into the PBA Commissioner's Cup Final Four.

Ginebra methodically cut the Meralco Bolts to size with their sharp execution and solid defense to complete the sweep 104-90 on Wednesday.

"Coming to the semis with a seven-game win streak, it's a blessing and curse," Cone said after the win. "It's a blessing we got some momentum playing well but curse because at some point, you can come down the mountain, so we just have to see how long we stay on top of the mountain."

Since 104-97overtime loss to San Miguel that dropped Ginebra to 1-5, the Kings went on a tear, closing out the elimination round with five straight wins to secure the fifth seed in the playoffs.

Ginebra showed its consistent plays in the quarterfinals by dominating Meralco, which had a stronger, bigger import in Arinze Onuaku.

Cone admitted the Kings got off to a slow start as Greg Slaughter recovered from a foot injury.

When Justin Brownlee finally helped Alab Pilipinas win the Asean Basketball League title, Cone had to wait for nearly a month for Brownlee to recover before cutting Charles Garcia loose.

"We kept waiting for Justin to get healthy so we can bring him in, so there's a lot of disruption in our first six games," Cone said. "But we tried to smoothen things out and now, we're moving in the right direction, now it's fun to watch, fun to go to practice."

Cone isn't calling off practice on Thursday and will continue grinding while waiting the result of the knockout match between Rain or Shine and GlobalPort on Thursday.
