Philippines interested to bid for 2030 Asian Games

The Philippines is looking to bid for the hosting rights of the 2030 Asian Games.

Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) secretary-general Patrick Gregorio confirmed the news to ESPN5 on Monday that Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano, POC president Ricky Vargas and Philippine Sports Commission Butch Ramirez have had initial talks about it.

"We are interested. We have been discussing it," Gregorio told ESPN5 in a short message.

But Gregorio stressed that the plan is still in the "discussion stage."

Gregorio also shared a statement coming from Vargas, saying: "With full government support together with the PSC, we should bid for the 2030 hosting of the Asian Games."

The next edition of the Asian Games in 2022 will be held in Hangzhou, China before it moves to Nagoya, Japan in 2026.

The Philippines last hosted the Asiad in 1954.

Information from ESPN5's Lyn Olavario was used in this report.
