Power to the people -- Maine professional hockey team could be nicknamed the Wild Blueberries or Lumberjacks

The fate of a new professional hockey team in Portland, Maine, lies in the hands of its fans.

Well, not literally -- but the team's nickname is being determined by an online fan vote, and the final five nicknames are in.

Let's just say the potential nicknames are quite ... unique: the Mariners, the Watchmen, the Lumberjacks, the Puffins and the Wild Blueberries.

"I'm happy with any of the five," Adam Goldberg, vice president of business operations for the franchise, told The Portland Press Herald. "I think all five have good value, a good connection to the area, and some good marketing [possibilities] behind them."

The Mariners nickname pays homage to the Maine Mariners -- who played in Portland from 1977-92 -- and might be the early leader in the clubhouse. However, fans seem willing to buck conventional wisdom and support a team with a unique nickname.

"If you could be a Duck ... you could be a Puffin," Michael Murphy, a local resident, told The Portland Press Herald.

According to Goldberg, the team -- which will begin play in the 2018-19 season as members of the ECHL -- won't strictly adhere to the popular vote but will do its best to follow the fans' wishes.

"We won't go purely based on percentages," he added. "But I'd like to think we're smart enough to know when something is wanted."

So what's your favorite? The Portland Wild Blueberries has a nice ring to it, doesn't it?
