Racing 92 have slammed the "grotesque" decision to only fine Saracens for fielding an ineligible player in their Champions Cup match last month.

European Professional Club Rugby (EPCR) had brought a misconduct complaint against Saracens after the club informed the governing body that prop Titi Lamositele may have been ineligible when he played against Racing in round six.

The EPCR announced on Friday that the English and Europeans champions escaped expulsion from the competition but were fined £42,400.

Racing released a statement on Saturday condemning the decision: "Racing 92 duly note this grotesque decision.

"Congratulations to Saracens for this achievement. We now know that a club can play at the highest national division by sitting on their salary cap for several seasons.

"We now know that a club has the chance to be accepted in a major international competition this season by continuing to making fun of the rules.

"We now know that a club only risks 0.07% of its budget if it fields an ineligible international.

"Rugby school of life, this marvelous sport doesn't have the same value for everyone but we will be delighted to play against our friends Clermont Auverne (in the Champions Cup quarterfinals)."

Lamositele, 24, was eligible to play when Saracens announced their squad for the match on Jan. 19 but they said the American's work permit had expired the day before the game.

The prop came on as a replacement in the 60th minute of the final pool game as Saracens beat Racing 27-24.

Saracens were relegated from the Premiership the day before the Champions Cup match for breaching salary cap rules.

Saracens will face Leinster in the Champions Cup quarterfinals in April.
