Danny Cipriani will get the chance to reignite his England career almost three years after he earned the last of his 14 Test caps.
In-form Wasps fly-half Cipriani, 30, has been included in Eddie Jones' squad for the tour of South Africa and is joined by teammates Dan Robson and Jack Willis.
Hurricanes captain Brad Shields, who effectively became eligible when he agreed to head to the Ricoh Arena at the end of the current Super Rugby season, was released by New Zealand Rugby (NZR) on Thursday and also takes his place in the 34-man party.
In all seven players have received their first England call-ups as Ben Earl, Jonny Hill, Ben Spencer and Cameron Redpath join Robson, Shields and Willis.
In the absence of Dylan Hartley, Owen Farrell will captain the squad in South Africa, while his Saracens teammate Billy Vunipola returns to the setup following injury.
Danny Care, Dan Cole, James Haskell and Richard Wigglesworth have all been rested for the summer as England look to secure a first win against the Springboks in South Africa since 2000.
"Our tour to South Africa will be the most exciting challenge for us as a group since 2016," Jones said.
"We have an opportunity to create some history next month and win the Test series, something no England side has done before.
"There are a number of players out injured or not selected so it provides a big opportunity for others.
"With three weeks to prepare for the first Test in Johannesburg I am expecting players to come into camp with the right mind-set and we will be looking for them to break the mould in terms of being more assertive and on the front foot in everything we do.
"We will need to be physically aggressive and tactically smart against the Springboks who we know will be combative and reinvigorated by their new coaching setup."
Scott Wisemantel will join the England coaching staff as an attack consultant for the tour. The Australian, 48, was recently backs coach for Top 14 club Montpellier working with Jake White.
Jones also named a separate 31-man squad for next week's training camp in Brighton and the game against the Barbarians at Twickenham on May 27.
