Haskell: Being suspended for England 'the hardest thing' (3:08)

James Haskell explains his side of the red card incident that will see him miss England's opening two games at the Six Nations. (3:08)

After playing 75 Tests for England, James Haskell hopes he can return from his suspension and add to that tally as Eddie Jones prepares for the 2018 Six Nations.

A high tackle which on Jamie Roberts -- which saw him red carded and given a four week suspension -- means that he will miss the opening two games of the competition.

And although he was left out of Eddie Jones' latest squad ahead of the tournament, Haskell insists he wants to fight his way back into contention. With his experience, he may yet play a part in games against Scotland, France and Ireland towards the latter end of the competition.

"Get back in that team and play one more game. I would fight you for that," Haskell exclusively told ESPN, as he looked ahead to the tournament which opens up away to Italy. "The thing about the Six Nations is the fans love the camaraderie, and talking about who is going to beat who looking at the games.

"But all England are going to be thinking about is that Italy game. They [Italy] came to Twickenham [last year], played the rules to the edge of the limit, caused England problems. We got the result we wanted. We are going to Italy. It is a different squad, new players, everyone wants to beat England. Everybody comes and raises their game for it."

Despite all the teams looking to knock the reigning champions off their perch, Haskell believes Jones will have his charges ready, as he puts them through gruelling training sessions.

"There is a little bit of trepidation," added Haskell as he recalls meeting up with the England squad. "You know Eddie and his coaches -- they are not shy about putting you through hell when it comes to a training session.

"He talks a lot about doing more in less time. That always means you are working very hard. It is exciting but you never know what you are going to get.

"There are a little bit of nerves. Before when you were invited to England, you would be like, 'Oh no, this is going to be hell'. But here it is very aspirational environment under Eddie and everyone is trying to get in the door."

Jones is looking for a hat trick of Six Nations championship wins this year, losing just one of their last 10 games in the competition. That came when Ireland destroyed their chances of breaking the world record for most victories last year but Haskell has faith in a team that keeps evolving under Jones.

"England have kept evolving their game," he added. "They keep working hard. They keep changing what they are trying to do. They are very hard on themselves.

"They have gone back to do what an English side is supposed to do; a physical forward pack, attacking backs, playing at pace and it has worked so far."
