TWICKENHAM -- They say anything can happen in Sevens and that proved to be the case on Sunday as Scotland stunned hosts England 12-7 to defend their London title on the World Rugby Sevens Series circuit.
England were firm favourites heading into the final in front of 40,102 vocal fans, but the Dark Blues -- as they showed all weekend -- delivered in the clutch to send veterans Mark Robertson and Scott Wright out as champions.
The Red Roses got off to a flying start through prolific try scorer Dan Norton, but failed to add to that early score after some resilient defence from their neighbours from north of the border.
Down 7-0 at half-time, Scotland then caught the hosts napping as Hugh Blake scampered down the blindside to bring the scores level before captain Scott Riddell finished out wide to put his side ahead and hold on for just their second Cup victory on the circuit.
The Scots were staring down the barrel of a quarterfinal exit earlier on Sunday as they trailed New Zealand 21-0 at half-time. But four unanswered tries in the space of seven minutes saw them produce a remarkable 24-21 win.
They then produced another against-the-odds comeback to beat the USA 21-14 in the semis.
England -- who will have to wait another year to add to their last London title in 2009 -- finish the World Series season in second place, their highest placing in over a decade.
They couldn't have had a tougher path out of the quarterfinals on Sunday, with World Series champions South Africa standing between them and the final four.
It took a bit of magic from Norton -- who overtook Fijian sevens great Waisale Serevi on the overall points scoring list -- with a try after the final hooter to see England past the Blitzboks 19-14.
England were convincing in their 24-5 semifinal win over Canada before their final loss to the Scots.
Canada saw off the USA 22-19 in the bronze-medal match to round out the podium.
