Ireland has won its first ever Olympic rowing gold medal, with Fintan McCarthy and Paul O'Donovan taking out the men's lightweight double sculls.

McCarthy and O'Donovan won the gold medal in a time of 6 min 06.43sec.

Germany finished second with Italy third.

O'Donovan won the silver medal in the same event, with his brother Gary, at Rio de Janeiro in 2016.

The victory provide Ireland with its second medal at Tokyo 2020, after Aifric Keogh, Eimear Lambe, Fiona Murtagh and Emily Hegarty took bronze in the women's four.
