19 cricket fans arrested in India for celebrating Pakistan's victory

Police in India have arrested at least 19 people after they allegedly rooted for Pakistan in the final of the Champions Trophy between the countries.

The arrests were made in separate incidents in the states of Madhya Pradesh in central India and Karnataka in the south.

The fans have been charged with sedition after Pakistan's 180-run victory Sunday over bitter rivals India. The maximum sentence for sedition in India is life imprisonment.

Fifteen of the arrests took place in the village of Mohad in Madhya Pradesh's Burhanpur district.

"They celebrated with firecrackers, distributing sweets and raising slogans of 'Long live Pakistan,'" officer Ramasray Yadav told The New York Times. "They expressed hatred toward India and friendship toward Pakistan. They are charged for sedition and criminal conspiracy."

Pakistan is a mainly Muslim country, while a majority of Indians are Hindu. Those arrested are Muslims.

"These arrests are patently absurd, and the 19 men should be released immediately," Asmita Basu, of Amnesty International India, said on Amnesty's British website.

"Even if the arrested men had supported Pakistan, as the police claim, that is not a crime. Supporting a sporting team is a matter of individual choice, and arresting someone for cheering a rival team clearly violates their right to freedom of expression."

This isn't the first time cricket fans have been arrested by Indian authorities for celebrations. Sixty-seven students in Kashmir were arrested in 2014 and charged with sedition after cheering for Pakistan. Those charges were eventually dropped.
