Minnesota Twins designated hitter Miguel Sano was carted off the field Tuesday night in Houston after an awkward slide into second base while advancing on a wild pitch in the second inning.
The team said X-rays were negative, and he was listed as day-to-day with a bruise on his lower left leg.
Sano had a rod inserted in his left leg in November. The procedure helped him deal with a stress reaction in his shin that came after he fouled a ball off the bone last August.
Sano remained on the ground at Minute Maid Park for several minutes after his slide while a team trainer tended to him. He did not put any weight on his left leg as he was helped onto the cart and taken off the field, acknowledging the applause of fans.
"He was in a lot of pain,'' Twins manager Paul Molitor said. "It kind of radiated down to the ankle.''
Molitor said Sano would be on crutches for a day as a precaution but was optimistic that Sano wouldn't be out for "too long.''
Sano was replaced by pinch runner Tyler Austin.
The Astros beat the Twins 5-2.
