Connor Wilson, South Africa's sole representative at the Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, registered a 'did not finish' in the Men's Giant Slalom on Sunday.

Austria's Marcel Hirscher went on to collect his second gold medal of the Games, with Henrik Kristoffersen of Norway and France's Alexis Pinturault claiming silver and bronze. However, Wilson's day had already ended by that stage.

The 21-year-old veterinary science student was running 103rd after the Intermediate 1 split of Run 1 at the Yongpong Alpine Centre, before bettering his position to 99th at the Intermediate 2 split.

However disaster struck for Wilson before the Intermediate 3 split when he crashed and was unable to finish.

As a result his participation in the event came to a disappointing end, with him joining 24 other skiers who missed the chance of getting a second run.

It was better news for the other African skier in the event in that Eritrea's Shannon Abeda managed to come home 67th of the 85 who managed to complete Run 1 -- finishing with a time of 1:19.86.

In the decisive Run 2, Abeda set a slightly slower time of 1:20.01 for a combined 2:39.87. He did, however, climb up the table to finish 61st overall, some 21.83 seconds slower than Hirscher's combined time.

Both Wilson and Abeda will hit the slopes again on Thursday, 22 February when they take part in the Men's Slalom event.
