Week 3 recap: How to evaluate Calvin Ridley after his 3-TD game

Atlanta's Calvin Ridley had the type of game few rookie receivers have ever experienced. Jason Getz-USA TODAY Sports

Atlanta Falcons rookie wide receiver Calvin Ridley caught three touchdown passes in Sunday's wild overtime loss to the New Orleans Saints. Meanwhile, veteran Julio Jones caught three touchdown passes ... last season.

Fantasy managers want to turn Ridley's awesome game, one of the better ones in league history for a first-year wide receiver, into an indictment on Jones, but that seems farfetched. Sure, Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan threw five touchdown passes for the first time in his career and none went to Jones, a consensus top-five fantasy option. This hardly means Ridley is more valuable than Jones, who made noise with five catches for 96 yards (most of it on a 58-yard play), but hey, this is how it is. Jones finished as the No. 7 fantasy wide receiver last season despite the notable lack of touchdowns.
