Jordan Reed confident he'll return for Monday game against Chiefs

ASHBURN, Va. -- Washington Redskins coach Jay Gruden wasn't ready to proclaim them ready, but both tight end Jordan Reed and running back Rob Kelley already are eyeing a return Monday night against Kansas City.

Reed and Kelley were limited in practice Thursday, but both expressed confidence they would play. Kelley was optimistic last week as well but admitted by game time Sunday he did not feel as good. Reed never expressed hope that he could have played.

Linebacker Mason Foster (shoulder) and defensive end Matt Ioannidis (shoulder) also were limited.

Reed injured his ribs and sprained the SC joint in his shoulder in Week 2 against the Los Angeles Rams. Kelley injured his ribs in the same game.

On Thursday, Reed participated in blocking drills and also one-on-one work against the defensive backs -- neither of which he did the previous week.

"It feels good being back out there running around and just getting used to the injury," Reed said. "I'll get out there this week."

Reed said he was OK not playing last week because he knew he couldn't handle all his responsibilities at tight end -- and because the team has veteran tight ends in Niles Paul and Vernon Davis.

"It was a smart thing to let them go out there and ball out," Reed said. "Right now, I can get healthy and take a little bit more time. That's what I did last week."

Gruden said the bye week doesn't necessarily factor into any decision to play or rest both starters. If they play, they'll still get another week off.

For Kelley, he said he probably "went overboard today."

"It feels way better than last week," Kelley said. "Last week was crazy. I get to the game and was like, nah, I couldn't' do it."
