Browns regret letting Taylor Gabriel catch on with Falcons

The Atlanta Falcons found a surprise contributor right before the season when they claimed wide receiver Taylor Gabriel off waivers from Cleveland.

It was a move the Browns regretted, according to one team source.

"Hated that we did," the source told ESPN.com about cutting ties with Gabriel. "Have all these young guys that needed to play."

The Browns drafted four wide receivers, including first-round pick Corey Coleman. One of them (Jordan Payton) is 23 years old, while the other three (Ricardo Louis, Rashard Higgins, and Coleman) are all 22. But Gabriel, at age 25, is by no means and old player.

Regardless, Gabriel expressed no hard feelings toward the Browns.

"I mean, it was a just a business decision on their hands," he said. "They felt like it was the right choice. At the same time, I'm not really worried about that. ... That's the farthest thing from my mind."

Gabriel, who claimed to run a 4.28-second 40-yard dash coming out of Abilene Christian, played under Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan in Cleveland and continues to make plays for the Falcons when given the opportunity. In last week's win at Tampa Bay, he scored on a 9-yard jet sweep. The week before against Green Bay, he scored on a 47-yard touchdown strike from Matt Ryan.

For the season, Gabriel has 16 receptions (on 19 targets) for 227 yards and a touchdown along with two rushes for 24 yards and a touchdown. Gabriel, who started at Seattle, was inactive for the season opener and missed a game with a concussion. He is averaging 14.2 yards per catch and routinely shows the ability to go up and get passes.

"I just want to make as many plays that I can for this team," Gabriel said. "Whatever they want me to do, I'll do."

The Browns' threesome of Coleman, Higgins, and Payton have a combined 15 catches for 260 yards and two touchdowns, although Coleman has played in just three games since returning from a broken hand. (Louis has 16 catches for 183 yards with no touchdowns.)

It seems like people underestimate the 5-foot-8, 175-pound Gabriel's ability.

"I hope they don't underestimate me," Gabriel said. "This is the NFL. You should never underestimate anybody that's on the field because it's the best of the best. As long as we prepare throughout the week and keep doing what we've been doing, I feel like we'll be OK."
