T.J. Yeldon still getting praise for his block on Mike Mitchell

It was a block, not a run or reception, that got T.J. Yeldon the most notoriety from Sunday's victory in Pittsburgh. Don Wright/Associated Press

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- It has been three days since it happened, but T.J. Yeldon is still getting messages and notifications on Twitter about his block.

Or, more accurately, The Block.

The Jacksonville Jaguars running back hammered Pittsburgh safety Mike Mitchell to allow quarterback Blake Bortles to pick up a first down on a third-quarter scramble. It came on a third-and-8 play and allowed Bortles to gain 16 yards.

It was a pretty impressive block, too. Yeldon, who was out in the flat, drove his right shoulder into Mitchell’s shoulder and knocked him backward. GIFs were immediately made and posted on social media, and Yeldon was a star.

“My Twitter [was going crazy], and everybody was hitting my phone up about it,” Yeldon said Wednesday as the Jaguars continued preparations for Sunday’s game against New England in the AFC Championship Game at Gillette Stadium. “I had to make a play. Get Blake free for the first down.”

In the clips of the play, you can see Yeldon’s teammates reacting on the sideline. They loved it mainly because it came against Mitchell, who had angered Jaguars players with his comments about the Steelers playing the Patriots in the AFC Championship Game.

Mitchell also reportedly stood outside the Jaguars' locker room prior to the game talking trash and saying Jaguars players were “gonna know my name.” That was in response to Jaguars cornerback Jalen Ramsey, who earlier in the week asked who Mitchell was when he was told about Mitchell’s comments regarding the Steelers meeting the Patriots in the AFC title game.

“I heard he was waiting outside the locker room for us when we first pulled up,” Yeldon said. “I didn’t see him or hear nothing about it, so I was just playing how I always play.”

Bortles loved the block, too.

“He was just like, ‘Good f---ing block. Way to lay his ass out,’” said Yeldon, who ran for 20 yards and a touchdown and caught three passes for 57 yards in the Jaguars’ 45-42 victory.

Mitchell has not had good luck dealing with Jaguars running backs. When the Jaguars and Steelers met in October, Mitchell spent the game trash-talking with running back Leonard Fournette. So Fournette sought out Mitchell after stiff-arming linebacker Bud Dupree and breaking free on a fourth-quarter run.

The 6-foot-1, 221-pound Mitchell went low, and the 6-foot, 228-pound Fournette ran through the contact and ended up with a 12-yard gain.
