Colts should focus on re-signing Rashaan Melvin in free agency

Here are the moves the Indianapolis Colts should consider when free agency opens at 4 p.m. ET Wednesday, March 14:

Re-sign CB Rashaan Melvin: He went from looking like he would be the odd one out in the three-man cornerback rotation to being the Colts' top cornerback the entire season in 2017. His best performance of the season came against Pittsburgh in Week 10. Melvin shadowed Steelers All-Pro receiver Antonio Brown and held him to two catches on six targets for 15 yards until late in the game when Brown had a 32-yard reception on a broken play. General manager Chris Ballard plans to let the market be set before deciding which direction to go with Melvin. Losing him would add to the Colts' list of needs because it would leave them thin on experience at cornerback.

Sign left tackle Nate Solder: Offensive line has and continues to be a problem (NFL-high 56 sacks allowed in 2017) for the Colts. Solder has started his past 82 games at left tackle for New England. Either he or Anthony Castonzo, the Colts' starter, could slide over and play right tackle so that both the edges have Andrew Luck -- or Jacoby Brissett -- protected. Solder, who will be 30 in April, doesn't necessarily fit in the category of young players Colts general manager Chris Ballard prefers to sign, but he's the best offensive lineman on the market after Andrew Norwell agreed to sign with AFC South counterpart Jacksonville, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Re-sign Jack Mewhort: Norwell was the best guard on the free agent market. Mewhort started every game he played during his four seasons with the Colts. The issue with Mewhort isn't his ability to play every position along the offensive line, it's his ability to stay healthy. He missed 17 games over the past two seasons. He is healthy after being placed on injured reserved in Week 5 last season, and he could be another player the Colts can get at a bargain price.
