Deshaun Watson shows 'love and respect' for Warren Moon with throwback jersey

HOUSTON -- Deshaun Watson arrived at NRG Stadium before the Houston Texans' 33-17 victory over the Cleveland Browns wearing a throwback Warren Moon jersey in honor of the former Houston Oilers star quarterback.

Moon sent the jersey to Watson after they built a relationship since meeting last summer.

“It’s all love and respect for Warren Moon,” Watson said. “Had a privilege to meet him this summer at The Cam Newton Foundation. It was me, Cam and Warren. Just having a great conversation and a great night. We’ve been communicating throughout camp and throughout the season.

“He’s a great guy that I can look up to and ask for advice because he’s been in my shoes before. I just texted him and he said he’ll send me a jersey, so I pulled it out for this outfit.”

Moon saw the photo of Watson in the jersey before the game and tweeted:

Watson threw three more touchdowns on Sunday, and now has 15 passing touchdowns on the season. He holds the record for most passing touchdowns by a rookie through six games since the NFL-AFL merger. He was 17-of-29 for 225 yards with the three TDs and an interception that was returned for a touchdown against the Browns.

Moon retired before Watson turned 5 years old, but the rookie said even though he never watched Moon play, he knows his importance to the city of Houston.

“I’ve seen highlights, but I just know that he’s a big part of this city and this organization whenever the Houston Oilers were here, and just how the fan base is still in love with him,” Watson said. “What he’s done for this city and this organization was huge, and I’m trying to do that -- do the same things for the Houston Texans and continue to have success and build on it.”
