Season opener in doubt for Packers rookie DT Montravius Adams

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Montravius Adams' left foot is in a full cast, and he needs a scooter to get around Lambeau Field.

No wonder he's not sure if he'll be ready for the regular-season opener.

The Green Bay Packers' third-round pick had foot surgery last week after he felt some discomfort on the first day of training camp practice. What he first thought was just some soreness turned to the be a stress fracture that required a screw to be inserted into his foot.

The defensive tackle from Auburn never made it to the first day of pads. After two non-padded practices, Adams had the surgery.

Adams couldn't say whether he has any chance to be ready for the regular-season opener against Seattle in 33 days.

"I mean, I don't know," Adams said. "I'm just trying to take it a day at a time. I've never really been injured, so for me it's kind of hard. I try not to think about it and do my rehab."

Adams said the injury and subsequent surgery was similar to one of the procedures that fellow rookie Vince Biegel has had in the past year, but he did not say whether it was the same as the one Biegel had at the University of Wisconsin last fall -- when he was back after three weeks -- or the one he had in May. Biegel had the second surgery in May and hasn't practiced since. He's on the physically-unable-to-perform list. Adams is not a candidate for PUP because he has participated in at least one training camp practice. PUP is only for players who are not cleared for the start of camp.

"Everything happens for a reason," Adams said. "Maybe it was just a setback for me to get in my plays more and just get stronger. Right now, I'm just trying to look at the positives and just keep going until I can get back."

Adams said he had no history of an injury with his left foot.

"It just came in the middle of practice," Adams said. "I thought I was all right and was just going to get some treatment on it and then other things happened."

The Packers still have a relatively short injury list, but the fact that two of the four defensive players they drafted in this class aren't on the field is cause for concern.
