BASEL (Switzerland) -- India's Sameer Verma beat former world No. 2 Jan O Jorgensen to clinch the men's singles title at the Swiss Open Super 300 tournament on Sunday. The 23-year-old from Madhya Pradesh won 21-15, 21-13.
Sameer, who had won the Syed Modi Grand Prix Gold last year and reached the final at 2016 Hong Kong Super Series, thus lifted his first title of the season and also joined fellow Indians Kidambi Srikanth and HS Prannoy, who had won the title in 2015 and 2016, respectively.
"I was confident of doing well but I didn't expect an easy final," he said later. "I had beaten him [Jorgensen] narrowly in Hong Kong, so I knew he is a difficult player to beat but he is not 100 per cent fit yet as he is coming back from an injury." Jorgensen has made a comeback this season after being out of action for more than seven months due to a heel injury.
Sameer opened up a 3-0 lead early and capitalised on it to enter the break with an 11-7 advantage. Jorgensen won a video referral after the interval and narrowed the gap to 10-12 but Sameer moved 17-10 ahead, before winning the opening game comfortably in 17 minutes.
In the second game, the duo split the first 10 points before Sameer moved to an 11-6 advantage at the break. He remained well ahead of his opponent thereon, eventually winning the contest in 36 minutes.
