17-year-old Tejaswin Shankar broke a 12-year-old national senior record in high jump with an effort of 2.26m, winning gold at the 32nd National Junior Athletics Championships in Coimbatore on Thursday.

The record was previously set by Hari Shankar Roy of West Bengal who had jumped 2.25m, winning a silver medal in the Asian All-Star Athletics meet in Singapore in 2004.

Tejaswin cleared 2.06m, 2.12m, 2.18m and 2.21m on the first attempt, but was successful in clearing 2.26 m on the second attempt.

"I did not expect the record here. I have no idea what happened to me. It went like a fairy-tale," Tejaswin said after his event.

Tejaswin had earlier won a gold at the 2015 Commonwealth Youth Games and had recently finished first in the National Open Athletics in Lucknow in September with a jump of 2.22m.
