Kofi Kingston, one-third of the longest-reigning WWE tag team champions in history, The New Day, sustained a right ankle injury and will be out for several weeks, according to WWE.com.

After a match on Monday Night Raw, which saw The Revival make its debut and defeat The New Day, Kingston was attacked by Scott Dawson and Dash Wilder. In a similar fashion to injuries they inflicted upon several tag teams in NXT, a top-rope splash on a prone Kingston, who wasn't a participant in the previous match, struck his leg.

In a statement to the WWE, Dr. Chris Amann said Kingston "heard a crack and was unable to put weight on his leg following the [postmatch] attack."

Kingston, a 12-time champion in the WWE (including five stints as a tag team titleholder), will require arthroscopic surgery to remove bone chips.

Kingston made his WWE debut in January of 2008 as part of the ECW brand. Later that year, he defeated Chris Jericho to win the Intercontinental championship.

Along with fellow New Day members Big E and Xavier Woods, Kingston's latest reign as a tag team champion lasted for 483 days, outlasting the previously held record of 478 days by Demolition. That stretch ended in December at Roadblock: End of the Line, when the trio fell to Sheamus and Cesaro.

Although Kingston and The New Day did not have a match at WrestleMania, they acted as hosts for the event, joining The Rock and Hulk Hogan in having fulfilled such a role.

With the format still yet to be announced, it remains to be seen how this injury might affect The New Day over the next two days as part of the upcoming "Superstar Shakeup" on Raw and SmackDown.
