Coulthard out to help his Supercars mate

Supercars driver Fabian Coulthard is out to ensure his year to forget is one to remember for teammate Scott McLaughlin.

The DJR Team Penske pair have experienced very different 2018 campaigns heading into this weekend's Gold Coast 600.

McLaughlin sits just 19 points behind championship leader Shane Van Gisbergen after his third-place finish at the Bathurst 1000 earlier this month.

Coulthard meanwhile is down in seventh, almost 1000 points off the championship lead after a season boasting just one win and two other podium finishes so far.

It's a far cry from this time last year when Coulthard lobbed at Surfers Paradise holding a 91-point lead over eventual champion Jamie Whincup.

While the New Zealander concedes his own title hopes are long gone, he freely admits he's out to help his Kiwi mate McLaughlin land the championship.

"I'll do what I can to help Scott," Coulthard said after finishing third-fastest in Friday practice behind McLaughlin and Van Gisbergen.

"Obviously if the team wins, we win ... we're obviously a little bit out of the equation in terms of our championship so, like I say, we'll do what we can."
