The Springbok attack: Even the props are running good lines ...

Coenie Oosthuizen Anesh Debiky

A lot has been said about the Springboks' new-found spirit and energy on defence. But their attack has definitely been sharper in 2017 as well after a few stuttering displays during a nightmare 2016.

In the first two Test matches against the French, the players have looked lively with ball in hand, running onto the ball from depth and at pace, while their running lines have been exceptional.

One of the best of examples of a player running a great line and at pace during this series is not a backline, but actually a big prop.

Replacement tighthead Coenie Oosthuizen scored a wonderful try in the second Test in Durban, when he ran a beautiful line off the scrumhalf next to the ruck. The only thing that wasn't subtle about that try is that Oosthuizen decided to run over the last French defenders instead of side-stepping ...

"It is always special when you score in the green and gold jersey and as a prop you definitely never forget it," said Oosthuizen.

"It was a last second decision on my part to run over him. It was a split second. I probably could have stepped him," he joked.

Oosthuizen credited new backline coach Franco Smith with the improvement in the Boks' attacking play. Smith has made a few subtle changes to the South Africans' attacking shape, which has put more of an emphasis in running straight and into space.

Obviously quick ball to attack from depends on the forwards laying the platform for the players upfront. The Bok forwards have come to the party in this series, which has allowed their backs to get good ball to attack with.

However, like most aspects of their game, the Boks' attack still needs to be fine-tuned. They are still struggling to finish off their chances, but it's definitely better than last year.

"That is our general attacking shape. It is the shape that we run when we train. Franco is very specific with running lines. He has formulated an attacking game plan that everyone can buy into, that everyone fits into, and that makes it level for everyone," Oosthuizen said.

"Franco has made a huge improvement for us attacking-wise, by bringing each and every player into the attacking structure. He likes focusing on what makes you good as a player and then works around that. I think we have adapted quite nicely. It is fun to score tries. Rugby is always more enjoyable when you are scoring tries and your team is scoring tries."

"The forwards always think they are as good at running as backs. We have started working on some moves in training. It often doesn't work out as planned." What was great this week was that it worked. And that gives us great confidence that it will work out for us if we stick to what Franco wants us to do."
