How the Springboks rated: Dynamic Marx make his mark

Springbok hooker Malcolm Marx breaks through the French defence at Loftus Versfeld Kim Ludbrook, EPA

Tendai Mtawarira 7/10: Solid at scrum time, and looked like his old self with ball in hand. His experience is vital in this largely green South African team, and if he continues to play at this high level he will feature at the World Cup.

Malcolm Marx 9: The Lions hooker was unstoppable with ball in hand, while his lineout throwing is much improved. Marx is a dynamic player who could become a great in the Springbok jersey.

Frans Malherbe 7: The Springbok tighthead didn't have the best 2016, but he certainly showed why coach Allister Coetzee rates him as one of the best in the world. He scrummed well, and his work-rate was outstanding.

Eben Etzebeth 7: He was the Boks' go-to man at the front of the lineout, while he carried and cleaned with a lot venom. He also didn't get involved in the off the ball stuff this time around.

Franco Mostert 8: You have to be in some kind of form to keep Pieter-Steph du Toit out of the Bok team. Mostert was everywhere against France. His work-rate is second none.

Siya Kolisi 7: He doesn't really like to play openside, but it certainly didn't look like it at Loftus Versfeld. Made a few steals, while his hits around the ruck were fierce. Should have done better with his clean break.

Oupa Mahoje 6: The Cheetahs loose forward did the grafting in the engine room, making lots of tackles and trying to make sure that they get over the advantage line. Decent outing.

Warren Whiteley 8: The new Springbok captain is a natural-born leader. He led the Boks well in his first Test as captain, making all the right decisions. He also created Ross Cronje's try from a brilliant lineout move.

Ross Cronje 7: The scrumhalf was outstanding debut, with his fast service giving the Bok backline great ball to play from. He also kept the French defenders honest around rucks. However, his box kicks were a bit too deep.

Elton Jantjies 7: This was arguably his best performance in a Springbok jersey, with the Lions man dictating play like he does in Super Rugby. Goalkicking was superb, and unlucky not to see some of his tactical kicks come off.

Courtnall Skosan 7: The rookie wing didn't see much of the ball, but he didn't freeze to death on the wing either. His work-rate was good and his great chase led to the Boks' penalty try in the second half.

Jan Serfontein 6: The Bulls centre was largely anonymous in the first half, as his centre partner Jesse Kriel saw most of the ball. Rounded off a great run by Andries Coetzee in the second half.

Jesse Kriel 7: Kriel is a great attacking weapon for the Boks at outside centre, with his speed and power allowing him to break the line. However, his defensive frailties remain an issue.

Raymond Rhule 7: The Ghanaian-born winger is a wonderful footballer with a lot skill and pace. He showed glimpses of ability against the French, while he was strong on defence.

Andries Coetzee 8: This kid can play. Coetzee set up two of the Springboks' tries with two lovely breaks, which showed his great running ability, as well as his match awareness.

Bench: Bongi Mbonambi 7, Steven Kitshoff 7, Coenie Ooshuizen 6, Pieter-Steph du Toit 7, Jean-Luc du Preez 7. Francois Hougaard 7, Frans Steyn 7, Dillyn Leyds (Not long enough on the field to be rated).
