NASCAR releases 2019 Cup series schedule

The 2019 NASCAR Cup Series schedule looks much like the 2018 schedule, with only the Easter break coming at a different spot in the 36-race slate.

The 2019 season will open Feb. 17 with the Daytona 500 and end Nov. 17 at Homestead-Miami Speedway. There are three off weekends, with the first coming after nine races instead of six because of where Easter (April 21) falls on the calendar.

The series won't race on the weekend of golf's U.S. Open (which is June 13-16) and has another Sunday off Aug. 25 before the final 12 weeks of the season.

NASCAR made several changes to the 2018 schedule, with Indianapolis getting the last race of the regular season and the opening round of the playoffs consisting of Las Vegas, Richmond and Charlotte. Dover will again open the second round in 2019, followed by Talladega and Kansas.

The third round will remain Martinsville, Texas and Phoenix with the championship at Homestead.

NASCAR's five-year sanction agreements with race-track operators that run from 2016 to 2020 require it to have the schedule set by April 1, but NASCAR has asked for extensions in previous years to finalize changes.
