Ironman cancels St. Petersburg 70.3, bans Russian, Belarusian athletes from some events

The Ironman group announced the St Petersburg 70.3 triathlon on July 17 has been canceled as a result of Russia's war on Ukraine.

The group also announced that Russian and Belarusian athletes, both age-group and professional, are banned from competing in world championship events. However, age-group athletes still will be allowed to compete in non-world championship events in a neutral capacity.

A statement read: "The Ironman group stands in solidarity with the people of Ukraine, our athletes and their community, and condemns the actions dictated by Russian leadership during this deeply troubling international crisis.

"While we recognise the difficult situation created for Russian and Belarusian athletes by these steps, we believe these are necessary to protect the integrity of our events."

The move to ban athletes licensed to Belarus and Russia is in line with the IOC and World Triathlon's stance, and includes this weekend's 70.3 event in Dubai, both full-distance world championship events in Utah and Kona, Hawaii, in 2022, and the half-distance world championships in Utah.

Ironman added it is offering assistance to any athletes residing in Ukraine and that individuals will be contacted with options available to them.
